Recap and Analysis by Amy Hood- @Amylia403
As we get closer and closer to the season finale, Once Upon a Time is definitely raising the stakes for all of our favorite Storybrooke residents. This week, we got more insight into Emma's past while in current time her future became more uncertain. Hades proved to be even more devious than we thought, and Rumple pulled a fast one, putting him back in our good graces.

The flashback this week was all about Emma. We met Cleo, a bailbonds woman who finds Emma with the intention of taking her back to Phoenix for skipping bail. Cleo gives Emma some leeway and decides to let her stay in town one more day to try and find out more information about where and who left her when she was a baby. Unfortunately for Emma, there isn't anything new for her to learn, but the two women strike up a begrudging sort of friendship in the short time they have together. As it turns out, Cleo gave up a daughter for adoption and can feel for Emma's struggle. In a moment of advice that will start Emma on a journey to who we know her as now, Cleo tells Emma that she has to protect herself, that the jacket she herself wears is armor and Emma should find a way to protect herself as well. She also tells Emma that she needs to let go of the struggle to understand why she was abandoned and move on. Cleo is hurt after she and Emma escape the police while searching records and Emma is forced to leave her bleeding and presumably dead in an alleyway.

Souls of the Departed- 5x12
Recap & Analysis by Amy Hood- @Amylia403
The winter hiatus is over and the first episode up was definitely worth the wait. Once Upon a Time turned 100 this week and a carriage full of guest stars turned up for the landmark episode. In a moment that many fans had hoped for, Neal returned to warn Emma of the dangers ahead. He assured her that he isn't in the Underworld and is in a place where he is happy. The meeting took place in the yellow bug, near a roller coaster, suggesting that Neal's Heaven is his younger days with Emma. This moment also gave Emma the ability to tell Henry later in the episode, when he was trying to find Neal at Underworld Granny's, that his father was happy

The flashback this week centered around the events of Regina's birthday. Unhappy with her inability to kill Snow White, she wants only for her birthday to be over. Henry Sr., always the concerned father, asks Sydney/Magic Mirror to summon Cora so he can speak to her through the mirror in an Enchanted Forest to Wonderland trans-realm call. Cora uses this chance to escape the mirror and, in her twisted motherly way, gets the one thing Regina really wanted for her birthday: Snow's heart. In an effort to save Regina's soul and keep her from going dark forever, Henry Sr. steals back the heart and returns it to Snow. This is only revealed when Regina goes to crush it and instead of being in pain, Snow simply laughs off Jiminy (getting a little fresh) who had been stuck in her tuffets. Furious, Regina shrinks Henry Sr. and puts him in a box, which Mommy Dearest Cora grabs just before she is banished through the looking glass and back to Wonderland.

THE PRICE
by Amy Hood- @Amylia403

Season 5 is off to a running start and the break-neck speed continued in this week’s episode, "The Price". Longtime fans of the show know that the title is reflective of Rumple’s frequent warning that “All Magic Comes With A Price.” We discovered this week that it is not just Rumple who asks payment in return for magic, but every act of dark magic requires it, no matter who requests it.

The residents of Storybrooke are trapped in the town once again by a curse. This time it is Emma, the new resident Dark One, who has cast it. The group of heroes who traveled to Camelot six weeks prior have no memory of what happened, and anyone trying to cross the town line is changed into a tree. (Alas, poor Dopey. His bravery in testing the town line will be remembered). Similarly, this is reflected by Merlin’s predicament in Camelot, as we see in a flashback that he is trapped in, or as, a giant weeping willow.

Episode Recap by Amy Hood - @Amylia403

With Once Upon A Time rushing forward toward the mid-season finale, this week’s episode proved to be one of the strongest yet in Season Four. There were moments of laughter and lightheartedness, as well as some definite tear jerkers. The themes Oncers hold dear were very much at the heart of this episode. Family, love, faith, forgiveness and hope were at the core of the stories. What makes a family? Can forgiveness really bring peace and does it matter how long it takes? Is hope really enough to carry you through when everything seems dark?

This week the curse of Shattered Sight hit the town full force and we saw the repercussions everywhere. In the streets Doc slaps Dopey, yelling at him to “Talk!” Dopey is mute and doesn’t fight back. Happy, who should by the very definition of his name be Happy, tries to kill Grumpy with a crossbow. Granny, Sneezy, Bashful, Sleepy and most of the townspeople run through the streets completely bent on hurting each other. At the jail some of the funniest moments of the episode took place between Snow and Charming as they argue between the bars of the cells. When Snow says she can’t believe she ever had a baby with Charming, he suggests that perhaps she didn’t, and that the baby could be Dr. Whale’s. After all, they did have that one night stand waaaaaaay back in Season One (We were cursed!). Reveling in all the chaos is our Snow Queen, Ingrid, who walks down the street almost giddy with what is happening.

All this season we have seen what we now know is Ingrid’s struggle to replace her sisters. In childhood, they were the best of friends. As we saw in a previous instalment, Ingrid accidentally froze and killed one sister and was trapped in the urn by her other sister immediately after. No chance to explain, no chance to grieve for the sister she lost. Alone and trapped for years, she became consumed by the need to get back a family; a family who would love her. While she has indeed seemed crazed and unstable, you can understand how her mind could drive her to this point after the isolation. Emma and Elsa are her best chance to get back to the place that she remembers as the only time she was happy and accepted. Elsa is blood, but Emma is not. As we’ve seen on the show, and (many of us) in our own lives as we connect with others, know, family isn’t always a bond made by blood relation. Ingrid has placed those ribbons that once were worn by her own sisters onto Emma and Elsa to cement the bond. Neither thinks for a moment that they will ever or could ever feel anything for Ingrid, but then we see the flashbacks. Neither Elsa nor Emma can remember their interactions with Ingrid in the past. We have seen Elsa’s, but finally we got to see Emma’s this week.

We Are Both

                                                           By Amy Degenstien Hood

This week we start off on the edge of Storybrooke. The Royal Guard, our brave 7 Dwarves, have come to investigate “the line” at the edge of town. After drawing the short straw, Sneezy crosses the line and starts to shake while purple light flickers through him.

Back in town, we see the destruction that the wraith caused. Roads and buildings destroyed, everything is closed. All of the townspeople are in a panic while Red and Blue Fairy try to help organize the relief efforts. Geppetto hangs a hand drawn picture of his son Pinocchio as a boy, hoping someone has seen him.  In a hotel room, we see a wooden August, still lying in bed….and then he blinks.

At the mayor’s mansion, Charming confronts Regina about the hat. He knows that Regina does not have her full powers back. She tells him she doesn’t remember where the hat came from. After Charming makes a comment about the way Regina raised Henry, she replies “I will not take child care advice from a man who put his daughter in a box and shipped her to Maine.” One of the best lines of the series so far.

In a flashback of FTL, we see young Regina attempting to run away 2 days before her wedding. Vines suddenly shoot out and snatch Regina off her horse. Her mother, Cora, is standing behind her and explains that Regina is trapped by a spell and can not leave until after she weds the king. After that wedding, she can only leave if the king accompanies her. Regina argues that she only wants to be free, and doesn’t wish to marry the king. Cora tells her she will have unlimited power, and that power is freedom.

Broken

                                                           By Amy Degenstein Hood

I’ll start the review of the season opener with a warning. Hold on to your seats! So much happened, so many new characters and so many old favorites finally back together on our screens! Some of our questions were answered, but new ones arose. Time to get those brains working on theories for this season, looks like there will be plenty of opportunity for theorizing. Broken was a wild ride from beginning to end.

This week, we started in a totally unfamiliar setting. We see a man walking through what appears to be New York City. (This is actor Michael Raymond-James who is new to the show) He makes it to his apartment where some of the items around the room are; a sign that says “Cleaners & Hatters”, a very bright portrait of an upside down red hand (thought to be a symbol to ward off evil), and an open window. He also has an mp3 player which he is listening too, but everything else in his apartment seems dated. His stereo equipment, the old style phone, all very 1980’s. It begins to rain, and as he tries to close the window, we see a pigeon fly in holding a postcard. The man picks it up and reads the word “BROKEN” written across the back. He flips it over to see that the picture on the front is of Storybrooke. Start the speculating Oncers! Who is this man? Who sent him the post card? I have my theories already, but I would love to hear yours!
