The Dark Swan. Camelot. Merida. Apart, these phrases have their own meaning, but when combined, it means that season five of ABC’s hit series Once Upon A Time has finally arrived! Series creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz chatted with Once Upon A Fan’s Zach Van Norman for our annual premiere interview, where they dished on the quest to save the Savior, the journey to Camelot, and what we can expect to see from primetime's first-ever LGBT fairy tale storyline.

My first question is about Emma, since she’s the focus of Season 5. She’s always had a special magic since she is the Savior and sort of the embodiment of true love. So I was curious, now that she’s the Dark One, and the embodiment of Dark magic, how are those two things going to coexist within her? What kind of struggle is she going to face with this?

Horowitz: I think that, you know, Emma’s going to struggle with the darkness in that it’s not like flipping a switch where she’s changed who she is; it’s more about how the Dark One accentuates who you already are, and then kind of pushes you towards maybe making not-great choices that you wouldn’t normally make.

Adam Horowitz & Eddy Kitsis Discuss Season 4 & the Introduction of Frozen Characters to Once Upon a Time

by Diane J Reed & Guest Interviewer Joanna Waddell

"We at Once Upon a Fan were so fortunate to get a hold of Adam & Eddy right before the start of Season 4, and they very generously spoke to us about their ideas and dreams for the Frozen characters and the regulars on Once Upon a Time. In addition, it's always been a personal dream of mine to "give back" to the Oncer community by creating an entirely fan-driven interview that features questions for Adam & Eddy from Oncers all over the world. So prior to this interview, Gareth Hughes & I looked over hundreds of questions submitted through Twitter and chose as many as we could reasonably fit into the interview. I also invited a high school student, guest interviewer Joanna Waddell, to participate in asking questions so that a fan could see first hand what this process is like. We hope you enjoy this exciting interview and express our deep gratitude to Adam & Eddy for being so kind and always making time for their fans". ~ Diane J Reed

Hope is Our Brightest Star - An Interview with Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis

By Diane J Reed - @DianeJReed

You’ve seen Once Upon a Time for three seasons now—you’ve watched favorite characters come and go, people change, people become redeemed, and a host of fantastical lands journeyed through that test everyone’s mettle. But how do Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis keep their ideas and writing fresh episode after episode? With one word we can all relate to: Hope. For them, it is the human struggle to hold onto hope, despite all the odds, that energizes their writing and gives a poignant dignity to every show. During their hiatus before the second half of Season 3, I had the wonderful opportunity to chat with them about what’s coming for each character and what new worlds the show might venture into. The following is our conversation.

Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis Discuss Their Insights and Creative Strategies for Once Upon a Time’s Powerhouse Season 2 - by Diane J. Reed

Sometimes when you follow that yellow brick road with Toto tucked under your arm, you discover that the Wizard of Oz is REAL after all! Such was the case when I had the extraordinary good fortune to talk with the brilliant creators & writers of Once Upon a Time, Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis. Behind the magic curtain of Hollywood, these two geniuses take a passionate and very hands-on approach to cooking up those enchanting characters and plots that we’ve all come to love week after week. So put on your ruby slippers and get ready for a wild ride with this Season 2 exclusive interview!

Diane: Hi there guys—thanks for talking to us!

Eddy & Adam: Of course! Thank you for having the fansite - we are honored!

Diane: All right, I know we only have a short time, so let’s begin with the obvious: Everybody and his brother wants to know what the next season will be like now that the curse has ended. Is it safe to assume that fairy tale characters might venture out into the wider world to some extent?

Eddy: I would say that the first step is, “Can we cross the Storybrooke line? What will happen if you do that?” What do you say, Adam?

Adam: There’s a lot that has changed in our world with magic coming to Storybrooke. But at the same time, the show will continue to do many of the things it did before, which is telling stories where characters are welcome to go into other lands, but hopefully in a new way.

Diane: So the new magic might be just as restrictive as Storybrooke was with the curse, but also expansive sometimes in that you can traverse different worlds?

Adam: The stories we’re telling will be in the same format where you can flash back between time and place. But as far as what happens in Storybrooke with magic and your ability to come and go, those new rules and paradigms for alliances in Storybrooke are what we’re planning to explore in the first two episodes of the season. Very quickly, you should get an understanding of what Season 2 will be like and what the characters are going to have to deal with.

Diane: One thing we know for certain, though, is that the Storybrooke characters now have their memories back. Is that always a good thing?

Eddy: I think that’s a great point. I mean, if you were somebody like Archie, for instance, who has a conscience and for twenty years thought he was a psychiatrist—but now he remembers who he was and what he did to Geppetto’s parents. So I think the philosophical debate of “Are they better off knowing or not?” and “Who do we want to be—people of Storybrooke or Fairy Tale Land?” is definitely something we are going to explore this season. I don’t think it’s as easy as we would assume it would be.
